Book Synopsis

A standalone story in the Shadow Beast Shifters world. Best read after Reborn for storyline continuity.

Melalekin, "Angel" of the Honor Meadows, has been a warrior her entire life. Battle. Death. Loss. They were her constant companions until the day she met Mera Callahan. A shifter who ended up being so much more. A shifter who changed her life, and now... she has been reborn. The scars of her past are gone. Her losses are muted under the new life she plans on living.

There's just one being standing in her way. A grudge-holding desert deity who has made an art form out of making her life hell.

Reece of the Desert Lands is a god who is unused to being defied, and he has a very long memory of those who wronged him. Angel is the one he blames for the worst loss in his life, and he'll never let her forget it. Their history is tragic and bloodied, and the pair are set to clash one more time, especially when they end up trapped in the very spot where they lost it all. A meeting of the dynasties in the Delfora, the ancient desert lands, will force them to the place where it all began.

Here, they will learn that sometimes the past defines one's future and that there is a fine line between love and hate.

* This is a standalone in the Shadow Beast world and does NOT end on a cliffhanger. It is full-length at 100k words, and it is advised that you read the first three in the Shadow Beast Shifters series first (Rejected, Reclaimed, Reborn). This is an enemies-to-lovers story with action, snark, anti-heroes, and steam. It is recommended for 18+ due to the storyline and situations.

The Hook

I am incredibly excited to dive into the next installment in the Shadow Beast Shifters series. The earlier book ended with Melalekin being reborn after sacrificing herself to save Mare. I always suspected something was going on between Melalekin and Reece, and I’m eager to discover what happened in their story that caused them to hate each other so profoundly.

From what I can gather from the synopsis, Angel somehow wronged Reece, and he has held a grudge for millennia. Now, we are finally going to uncover the reasons behind it. I can't shake the feeling that the dynamic between Reece and Angel will lead to some intense emotional scenes.

For beings who have lived as long as they have, holding onto a grudge for that long suggests something significant occurred. I believe the only reason they even interact is because of Mare and her ability to bring happiness and joy to those around her. I wonder if we will witness a confrontation between Reece and Angel before things heat up or if we'll jump straight into their passionate yet tumultuous relationship, which I expect will be fantastic.

Either way, I can't wait to read this next book, and I look forward to seeing you in the comments!

Book Review

One thing I really liked about this book is that it had two voice actors reading the story—one for the female parts and one for the male parts. As someone who enjoys audiobooks, I appreciate this feature. I prefer it when the actors read their own gender's lines instead of one actor trying to switch between male and female voices. Aside from the dual narration, the story itself is also interesting, but it can be a bit misleading. Jaymin Eve includes a lot about Shadow and Mare in this book, even though it’s supposed to focus on Angel and Reece. If the story centers on Angel and Reece, it should focus more on their history and less on Shadow and Mare preparing for the holidays and going on a new adventure.

I want to clarify that I do enjoy Mare and Shadow; I’m glad they have a part in this book, but I don’t think they should have taken up as much space as they did. This story is set in the present, not the past, but Jaymin Eve’s world-building still amazes me with how she brings the scene to life. Plus, we can’t forget the steamy sex scenes in this book; they are quite wild. If you haven’t read the story yet, I highly recommend picking it up when you can. After reading this book, I’m excited for the next one in the series, Compelled, which promises to be even better, especially because one of my favorite characters, Simone, will be in it. I'll see you in the next book. Please leave a comment below so we can discuss this book and hear your thoughts.

Book Spoilers

Disclaimer: This section might contain Spoilers about the book because, as we read the books we try to provide readers with information that might catch them off guard  and/or trigger them to in one way or another. This is the main reason for this blog was created.

Although "Deserted" by Jaymin Eve was an exhilarating read filled with unexpected twists and turns, I must caution my fellow readers about the adult content and language present in this book. I recommend anyone under the age of 18 to read this book, as some scenes may not be suitable for younger audiences. Overall, there were only a few instances that raised concerns; this book is generally suitable for adult readers who appreciate a passionate romance and an exciting adventure that ends with a sacrifice.

Spoiler Alert:

Let's start at the beginning of the book, where we are taken back a thousand years to learn about the tragic event that sparked the feud between Angel and Reece. Reece's behavior towards Melalekin after the loss of her sister was quite insensitive, and it's understandable why she needed space to grieve. It was disappointing to see Reece hold a grudge and punish Melalekin for needing time to heal.

Melalekin's admiration for Mare is clear, but she does not see her own worth and strength. It's frustrating to see her constantly praise Mare while overlooking her own qualities. However, it's satisfying to see Melalekin eventually realize her feelings for Reece, despite his past actions towards her.

One memorable scene is when Melalekin stands up for herself by punching Dragger after he kisses her without consent. It shows her strength and assertiveness in asserting her boundaries. Melalekin is a badass, and I really wish she would see it.

Also, I totally called it; I totally knew that Angel and Reece were probably going to get pregnant with all of the sex they were having. It’s actually really exciting that they are good to have a baby, and so are Mare and Shadow. Those kids are going to have some really overprotective parents, I fear for those kids when it comes time for them to be born. I hope that in the next couple of books, we see Mare and Angel give birth to their children and that we get LP before the series ends, but we will see how things go. Either way, I’m excited about the next book, and I’ll see you in the comments.
