Book Synopsis

When Marina’s father summons her to their Croatian island from New York

—and away from her evaporating marriage—to help him save his failing cheese factory, she must face her rocky past and an uncertain future. How do you begin again when the past threatens to drown you? In the throes of an unraveling marriage, New Yorker Marina Maržić returns to her native Croatian island where she helps her father with his struggling cheese factory, Sirana. Forced to confront her divided Croatian-American identity and her past as a refugee from the former Yugoslavia, Marina moves in with her parents on Pag and starts a new life working at Sirana. As she gradually settles back into a place that was once home, her life becomes inextricably intertwined with their island’s cheese. When her past with the son of a rival cheesemaker stokes further unrest on their divided island, she must find a way to save Sirana—and in the process, learn to belong on her own terms. Exploring underlying cultural and ethnic tensions in a complex region mired in centuries of war and turmoil, The Cheesemaker’s Daughter takes us through the year before Croatia joins the European Union. On the dramatic moonscape island of Pag, we are transported to strikingly barren vistas, medieval towns, and the mesmerizing Adriatic Sea, providing a rare window into a tight-knit community with strong family ties in a corner of the world where divisions are both real and imagined. Asking questions central to identity and the meaning of home, this richly drawn story reckons with how we survive inherited and personal traumas, and what it means to heal and reinvent oneself in the face of life’s challenges.

The Hook

A Powerful Story About Family and Sacrifice. Summoned by her father She Leaves behind her life to save their Cheese Factory

I have the wonderful honor to read this book before it comes out, which for me is amazing because I am one of the many who loves cheese and always find a way to sneak it into my diet. Give me a bottle of wine and some cheese any day of the week and I will love it but let’s get serious here for a minute. This book is about a woman who has a miscarriage and is recovering from a failing marriage, but she comes home to help her family. From everything read so far about this book in reviews and from the synopsis this is gonna be a powerful book and really hit home with a lot of women, so I am gonna tag this book as Women fiction as well as fiction for that reason. Now for the good part...

What I Hope to See in The Book:

Of course, I hope they have a small section about the cheese at least, but no seriously, I am hoping to see the main character Marina continue to struggle with her marriage and miscarriage through out the book and that it’s not something just mentioned then forgotten about. I am hoping to see her struggle and then see her eventual acceptance at least with everything that happened to her. I think if that happens that will make this a super powerful book; and that’s not even mentioning how she gives up her life in New York to come home to help her family. That is a sacrifice that is hard to come back from, let's just say I am excited to get started and to read this book, and hopefully learn a little about my cheese lol.

Family Bonds, Overcoming Tragedy, and a Struggling Family Cheese Factory...

Reading "The Cheesemaker's Daughter" by Kristin Vukovic was an immersive experience for me. The author has a compelling way of drawing readers into Marina's world, portraying her struggles with raw emotion and nuanced depth. After experiencing a heart-wrenching miscarriage that left me feeling the grief alongside her, the depiction of her failing marriage just added layers of complexity to her character that I couldn't help but be moved by.

Despite these personal battles, Marina's determination to keep her family's cheesemaking business thriving in the face of adversity was truly inspiring. Vuković's narrative is rich with detailed descriptions that vividly paint the setting and characters, making me feel as if I were right there in the quaint village, tangibly feeling the tension and passion interwoven into the family feud that unfurls throughout the story. This book is a testament to resilience, love, and the strength of family ties, even when secrets and conflicts threaten to unravel them.

The true bond that a family can have as they come together in time of war and state reconstruction adds additional depth to the story and left me wanting to keep reading the story till the end. I definitely think that if you are looking for a heart wrenching story, where family bond can be repaired through loss and struggle then this is definitely a book you will want to read. I highly recommend buying this book when it is estimated to come out on August 06, 2024, or just preorder now so that you are guaranteed a copy at release date because this is a good read.

Book Spoilers

Disclaimer: This section might contain Spoilers about the book because, as we read the books we try to provide readers with information that might catch them off guard  and/or trigger them to in one way or another. This is the main reason for this blog was created.

Ok so I touched on this before because it was in my hook but I wanted to reiterate that this book talks about the lead character having a miscarriage and hiding a failing marriage from her family. This might hit close to home for some so please be aware of this. Aside from these couple of hardships to watch out for there isn’t much else to be wary of. This is a good book and I can’t wait for the book to become available so I can get the final copy.
