Book Synopsis

"Aline that should never be crossed is about to be breached."

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend. "From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantism; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil. Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart. Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie... and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

The Hook

So Celaena becomes the king’s champion, love it. But will she be able to survive the king as she manipulates him throughout this story? This raises a good question; it requires Celaena to be sneaky and a good actress. Her fear of the king is palpable every time she’s in his presence she almost acts terrified like a scared little girl. It’ll be interesting needless to say, as she handles the king in this next book now that she’s his Champion and she has to work closely with him to do his bidding. The king is a cruel and ruthless man who strikes fear into the hearts of all who cross his path. Celaena must find the inner strength to overcome her terror of him if she hopes to use her position to help those in need.

She knows she cannot outright defy the king's orders, as that would lead to her own demise. Instead, Celaena must play a delicate game of manipulation and subterfuge. Every move she makes must be calculated and precise. One misstep could have disastrous consequences. Celaena hopes that in time, she can turn her fear of the king into resolve to undermine his cruelties in whatever small way she can.

As Celaena navigates the treacherous waters of the king's court, she finds herself drawn to Chaol, the strong and principled captain of the guard. Though their bond will surely be tested by the circumstances that force them to Live duplicitous lives, Celaena cannot deny the flutter of affection she feels whenever Chaol is near to her. Perhaps in him, she has found an ally who can help her survive this ordeal. Or perhaps their feelings will blossom into something more - a romance that could give Celaena the courage to fulfill her destiny.

Book Review

Sarah J. Maas truly excelled in keeping me engaged throughout Crown of Midnight. Her vivid descriptions and fast-paced storytelling had me hooked from the very beginning. I found myself eagerly turning the pages, desperate to know what would happen next.

Maas's action scenes were particularly captivating. She painted a clear picture with her words, allowing me to envision the intense battles and thrilling moments as if I were there myself. Her descriptions were detailed enough to appreciate the intensity of the action without being overly graphic or gory. She struck a perfect balance, keeping the scenes exciting while avoiding unnecessary gruesomeness.

While her descriptions of the action were richly detailed, I did wish she had provided more depth to the romantic elements of the story. The romance felt a bit glossed over, lacking the same level of descriptive detail that made the action scenes so engaging. As someone who enjoys well-developed romantic subplots, I would have appreciated Maas indulging in more vivid descriptions of those tender moments.

Despite my desire for a more detailed romance, I couldn't help but admire Maas's elegance in crafting her scenes. She painted vivid pictures without relying on excessive gore or gratuitous details. Her writing style allowed me to fully immerse myself in the story without feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Maas's ability to strike this delicate balance is a true testament to her storytelling skills.

Book Spoilers

Disclaimer: This section might contain Spoilers about the book because, as we read the books we try to provide readers with information that might catch them off guard  and/or trigger them to in one way or another. This is the main reason for this blog was created.

One of the most impressive aspects of Sarah J. Maas's writing in Crown of Midnight is her ability to convey intense, potentially triggering situations without delving into explicit, gratuitous detail. With a deft hand, she navigates difficult subject matter, such as scenes of torture or abuse, in a way that allows readers to understand the gravity of the situation without being overwhelmed by graphic descriptions.

This delicate balance is a true testament to Maas's  storytelling prowess. It takes a deft touch to explore dark themes and difficult subject matter without crossing the line into territory that might be too much for some readers to handle. By exercising restraint and relying on implication rather than explicit description, Maas ensures that her narrative remains accessible to a wide audience, while still retaining the emotional impact of the harrowing moments her characters face.

While there are a few scenes in Crown of Midnight that allude to torture and abuse, Maas never lingers too long on the specifics, instead allowing the weight of the implication to sink in without overwhelming the reader with graphic details. This approach not only showcases her skill as a writer but also her compassion for her audience, ensuring that even those who might be triggered by certain content can still engage with and enjoy her captivating storytelling.
