A great primal power has risen. The Queen of Flesh and Fire has become the Primal of Blood and Bone—the true Primal of Life and Death. And the battle Casteel, Poppy, and their allies have been fighting has only just begun. Gods are awakening across Lliseeum and the mortal realm, readying for the war to come. But when Poppy falls into stasis, Cass faces the very real possibility that the dire, unexpected consequences of what she is becoming could take her away from him. Cass is given some advice, though—something he plans to cling to as he waits to see her beautiful eyes open once more: Talk to her. And so, he does. He reminds Poppy how their journey began, revealing things about himself that only Kieran knows in the process. But it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll wake to or exactly how much of the realm and Cass will have changed when she does.
Ok Let's take a step back here, Poppy is amazing. She is not only a a primal but a powerful one and if I am not mistaken, Necktus the leader of the Dracon is basically hinting that Poppy is the next primal of life and death. He hints that Poppy isn't as powerful as Serafina YET... Did you catch that yet. To me that sounds like Poppy's power is only in it's infant stages right now but she will be just as powerful if not more so than the current king and queen of the gods. I have a feeling just form the references made in the previous books, that Casteel and Poppy Might become the next King and Queen of not just the world but of the gods as well.
Well, you know what they say, be careful what you wish for because it just might come true. In my last blog, I said that it would be nice if Jennifer had kept with the dual perspective of Poppy and Casteel. Well in this book we get an entire recap of the first 3 books but in Casteel’s perspective. Which I am not gonna lie I kind of liked because the book was funny as well as engaging. But I think what I liked the most was that it wasn’t all just a recap. Jennifer layered in the Present as well were the story of Casteel and Poppy continues with additional events in that present time.
So let me step back a minute and tell you what to expect in this book. It starts out again right where the last one left off with Poppy, Casteel, Kiran, Delano no, and Necktus in Wayfair Castle looking for Poppy’s father Iris to free him from the cage that Isbeth put him into in his animal form. Then after freeing her father, Poppy falls into stasis to finish her culling and this is where we start to hear a recap of the first 3 books from Casteel’s perspective. I know what you’re thinking, really a filler book what is this an anime show, lol. But, no, seriously take the time to read this book it’s not just a filler, like I said Jennifer lays in part of the present that progress the main story and Casteel’s perspective is funny, lustful, and enjoyable. Frankly, I think I prefer his perspective more because you really see how much he struggled with what he had to do to get his brother freed. I also think I liked seeing how he goes from thinking Poppy I just like the Ascended to realizing she is not and then falling in love with her bit by bit.
A few things though about this book, it did catch me for a loop a few times when the books jumps from the present to the past. I felt like the book just stops in the present and immediately jumps into the past which is a little confusing. It took a minute for me to realize what was going on, but again the ending is a great cliff hanger and I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out.
In this book, though there isn’t a lot to watchout for other than language and adult content; there is a part in the book at the very beginning, where Casteel inflicts self-harm on himself to block out the memories of what he went through when he was captured. This part might be a trigger for some people with whom this might hit too close to home.
We do not write this to encourage self-harm, but we do encourage that if help is needed, please reach out to someone authorized to assist you. there is help for those who want it.
