Book Synopsis

I did it, I've graduated, and no more pressure. And I've got a house, me a house! Road trip time for Jo, Sable, and me up to Albany, New York. The house both is and isn't what I expected. Beautiful-yes. Locked rooms with mysterious stuff-yes. But it also seems alive, which isn't possible. This isn't a movie, and houses aren't alive. But before I get to finish exploring the house, the draft office has decided I need another trial run, and of course, Agent Steven Alixant is their errand boy. Before I get a chance to figure out anything— there are some odd things about that house—I'm dragged off to New York City to help catch a serial killer, which makes no sense. A bachelor's degree doesn't make me Sherlock Holmes. Things are going well, I guess. Is it a good thing to figure out clues about a serial killer's identity? But when I get a phone call that something has happened to Jo and Sable, things get dangerous. I'm going to have to make a bunch of decisions, and I hope I can save Jo and Sable, even if it ends up costing me my life. When your luck is as twisted as mine, nothing is ever straightforward.

The Hook

From the title Inherited Luck, I can infer that this book is about Cori's inheritance, which she received in Educated Luck, the previous installment. The synopsis hints that Cori is about to get caught up in another murder investigation, once again partnered with Agent Steven Alixant. It feels like she just can't escape these murder cases! I’m starting to wonder if this constant involvement in crime is setting the stage for her career over the next decade. Will she find herself repeatedly thrust into situations where she has no choice but to step in and solve crimes?

My hope for this book is that Cori starts to ease up on her attitude towards Agent Alixant. He’s genuinely trying to help her, not hold her back, but she’s always so difficult when it comes to him. I get that she’s been through a lot, but a little cooperation could go a long way. And then there's Enderia—her attitude has been driving me up the wall too! But with the new challenge of catching a serial killer, I'm curious about how much more damage Cori might end up causing. She’s a total badass, no doubt, but she also has a limited number of offerings she can make without putting herself in serious danger.

I’m eager to see how Cori will handle the challenges ahead. Will she learn to work better with Agent Alixant and maybe even trust him a bit more? And can she manage her offerings carefully while still kicking butt and solving crimes? Let's dive in and see where Inherited Luck takes us next!

Book Review

Inherited Luck by Mel Todd is undoubtedly one of her stronger entries in the Twisted Luck series. In this book, Cori finds herself on the trail of a ruthless serial killer when, unexpectedly, her best friend Joe and Joe's girlfriend Sable are kidnapped by her sentient house. As someone who considers Joe more like a sister than just a friend, Cori doesn't hesitate to dive headfirst into danger to rescue them, regardless of the consequences. This action-packed plot is filled with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, showing just how far Cori will go for those she loves.

Mel Todd has truly outdone herself with this story. She not only introduces new characters who add depth and intrigue to the plot, but she also skillfully expands on the backstories of familiar faces, adding layers to the characters we've grown to love. Her creativity shines throughout the book, striking a perfect balance between innovation and taste. One of the highlights of her writing is her exceptional world-building; it's detailed, immersive, and incredibly engaging. Every chapter begins with a snippet about the history of her world, which I cannot stress enough—pay attention to these. They’re not just interesting tidbits; they provide crucial hints and foreshadowing that enhance your understanding of the story, especially regarding Joe, Sable, and the repercussions Cori must face after saving them.

Overall, Inherited Luck is a captivating read that showcases Mel Todd's ability to blend action, mystery, and deep emotional bonds. The way she intertwines the fates of her characters with the larger narrative arc is masterful. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next book to see how the story unfolds and what challenges Cori will face next. If you haven't already, this is definitely a series to dive into, and Inherited Luck is a standout installment that should not be missed.

Book Spoilers

Disclaimer: This section might contain Spoilers about the book because, as we read the books we try to provide readers with information that might catch them off guard  and/or trigger them to in one way or another. This is the main reason for this blog was created.

Inherited Luck by Mel Todd is a thrilling installment in the Twisted Luck series, but I want to give readers a heads-up about a particularly intense scene around the middle of the book. As Cori is navigating the trials to save Joe and Sable, she encounters a man who threatens to force her into a situation against her will. Thankfully, it doesn't go that far—Cori handles herself with her usual fierce determination, kicking the town's ass and escaping unscathed. However, the implication and tension of the scene could be unsettling or triggering for some readers. If you're sensitive to this kind of content, I advise caution as you approach the middle of the book.

Spoiler alert:

Joe still remains my absolute favorite character in the series, but Cori’s familiar, Karion, is quickly becoming a close second. There's just something about Karion's personality—his way of speaking is so funny and cute that I want to grab him up, squish him, kiss him, and cuddle him. Seriously, who wouldn't want a cat as a familiar, especially if that cat were Karion? His charm and wit add a delightful layer to the story, making every scene with him a joy to read.

Now, let's talk about the sentient house. I mean, can we talk about having a murder house? While I understand the house was trying to test Cori’s validity and worthiness of owning the property, it put Joe and Sable in grave danger, and that’s a tough pill to swallow. If Cori hadn't shown up when she did, who knows what could have happened? I absolutely love Joe, and I really hope nothing happens to her, but it seems like Cori has the absolute worst luck in the world. Yet, paradoxically, she's also the luckiest person alive. It’s such a fascinating contradiction, and I love how it plays out in her character development. I can’t wait to see what comes next in the series—Cori’s journey is far from over, and I’m eager to dive into the next book!
